.

And history has shown that immorality is a great signal, and that it won’t be long until that nation begins to decay and crumble.

.

It is the kiss of death for any nation to lose its moral compass!

.

This is why we are now witnessing our current western societies sinking deeper and deeper into immorality and self-destruction.

.

Yes, those very nations who once lovingly embraced the Christian Reformation are now suffering the results of their turning away from that great Christian revival.

One area in which society is now on a downward spiral is concerning the fast-changing attitude on abortion.

.

What most people are not aware of, is that abortion has been performed by doctors since the 1800’s, in which abortion was actually legal.

.

But just look at the current stance on abortion! We have seen the attitude concerning abortion make a rapid downward progression. Yes, just a few decades ago, abortion was reluctantly approved by this promiscuous society, which called for abortions to be “few and rare”.

.

But as of late, society has changed its stance, now calling abortion, “a good thing”. And now our society is even calling for partial birth abortion!

.

But it won’t stop there! No, as this nation sinks downward into the bottomless pit of sin, we can expect to see even more heinous degrees of murder of this type.

.

A number of times, the Bible even prophesy’s about cannibalism…by parents…eating their own children!

.

“The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.” Lamentations 4:10

.

Yes, believe it or not, even now, there are a few societal leaders wanting to have a conversation about cannibalism!

.

The Good News is that there is still time to escape the awful judgment which is fast coming down on this present-day culture.

.

Every man, woman, and child is highly urged and warned to flee from the wrath to come upon this mischievous and promiscuous society, while there is still time!

Mat 16:21  From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Mat 16:22  Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
Mat 16:23  But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Judgment Day

By admin On May 30th, 2024

The story of Lot escaping the fiery destruction against Sodom and its surrounding cities is much more than a mere condemnation of the world.

.

Oh yes, that story should be a frightening alarm to each and every man, woman and child living in these last moments of earth’s history!

.

Listen to God’s judgment of Sodom…”Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7

.

In this above verse, God destroyed those naughty cities to be an example of what we need to flee from in these last moments prior to the great day of Judgment.

.

But while the entire world needs to greatly fear that terrifying day of God’s wrath against mankind’s wickedness, this above verse from Jude has a special application to God’s professed people today!

.

Listen to God’s warning to His Church today…”Behold, this was the iniquity of thy [our} sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.” Ezekiel 16:49, 50

.

In this above passage, God is trying to warn us against our pride, our selfishness, our materialistic abundance, our wasting of time, our haughtiness.

.

No, the destruction of Sodom wasn’t so much for its perverseness, as it was for its proud and selfish pursuits.

.

How are we using our time? Are we using it to good account? Are we redeeming the time?

.

Or rather, are we squandering the precious hours of this day on vain/worthless pursuits?

.

Is my life mired beneath a mountain of earthly pleasures and ambitious pursuits? Do these words of James 5:5 describe my own lifestyle: “Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter”? Am I wanton (longing and hungering) for the pleasures and treasures of this life? Are my ears longing to hear some new precious promise from Scripture? Or are my ears instead perked up for some news, social or political gossip from the TV, the radio, the Internet or the printed page? Does my money go for the enrichment of lost souls? Or do I rather keep it back for my own personal pursuits? Or maybe I simply heap it up together, storing it in earthly investments, “where moth and rust doth corrupt, and thieves break in and steal? (see Matthew 6:19, 20 & James 5:3)

.

Well, there is some very Good News! Oh yes, while the hour is late, there is still time to turn from this vain/meaningless world, and begin the ascent on that Heavenward pathway, the “Highway…the Way of Holiness”. We have everything to gain (everlasting life and joy for ourselves and our loved ones), and we have everything to lose: the choice is ours. “There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches. The ransom of a man’s life are his riches:” Proverbs 13:7, 8

How To Keep The Sabbath, Part 5: “How To Prepare For The Sabbath”

To read Part 1, click here…Daily Devotional, Year 3 – September 28 (How To Keep The Sabbath, Part 1: “Finding Rest Unto Your Souls!”)

.

.

.

.

.

The Old Testament sets down rules for how to prepare for the Sabbath Day. Some of these rules are set forth in the Exodus 20:8-10 rendering of the 4th Commandment…  “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates…”

.

Okay, so in this 4th Commandment, the child of God is to cease from labor, but also his entire household is to cease from labor, including his livestock.

.

And so, by implication, the Sabbath-keeper is to make all necessary preparations, prior to the Sabbath, so that no work should be performed on that holy day.

.

As a matter of fact, five times in the four Gospels, the day of preparation is spoken of. And if one looks back in the Book of Exodus, the children of Israel were commanded to gather twice as much manna bread on the day prior to the Sabbath, so that there were to be no gatherings on the holy day. Later on a Hebrew man was even stoned to death for merely gathering sticks on the Sabbath! (see Numbers 15:33)

.

And so, the preparation for the Sabbath Day was obviously a very important duty for every God-fearing man, woman, and child!

.

As a matter of fact, most present-day Sabbath-keepers will attempt to do all their menial chores prior to the setting of the sun at the beginning of the Sabbath.

.

Well, this devotional will not attempt to persuade anyone as to whether to esteem one day above another, or to esteem every day alike. “Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind!” (Romans 14:5)

.

But no matter how the Reader views the Sabbath, preparing for a literally a 24-hour-per-week rest, or for a 24/7/365 spiritual rest in Jesus, there needs to be a spiritual preparation in both cases.

.

In other words, all Believers must prepare to keep that Sabbath day holy, either literally or spiritually. And the preparation required should be along these lines. Since no work should be done on the Sabbath, the Believer should gather twice as much manna on the preparation day. That is, to cease from our labors requires us to hide God’s Manna (His Word) in our hearts. After all, the works we really need to cease from, that we might keep the Sabbath truly holy, are the works of the flesh: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness…” Galatians 5:19

.

Yes, this kind of gathering of hidden manna is required by all who dare take the name of Jesus on our lips. And as Psalm 119:11 exhorts,  “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.”  This is where the manna of God’s Word is to be hidden: in our hearts!

.

But to make this kind of preparation, we likewise should have a clean house for our spiritual rest. And so, the Most Holy Place of the heart is first place we need to do our house-keeping: removing all the dusty and musty old world-loving clutter from our home and scrubbing all the man-uttered grafitti from the walls of our Most Holy Place: such a heart-cleansing will make room for us to replace the old with the new.

.

Well, you get the idea. In other words, the Bible is a spiritual Book. And whether or not the Reader attempts to keep “the letter of the law” or “the spirit of the law”, Jesus commands us…”Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

.

Here is the Sabbath-keeping that all true worshipers of God must engage if we ever hope to truly find rest and holiness. And to sit daily at the feet of Jesus and learn of Him will bring us into a rest unto our souls and a peace which surpasses all understanding! Every day of the week! 24/7!

August 1, 1893—Vital Connection With Christ Necessary
Those who are truly children of God are believers, not doubters and chronic grumblers. They believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. They believe that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” They believe that “he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 1 }
Through all ages and in every nation those that believe that Jesus can and will save them personally from sin, are the elect and chosen of God; they are his peculiar treasure. They obey his call, and come out of the world and separate themselves from every unclean thought and unholy practice. The Lord has graciously opened out to our understanding by the Holy Spirit rich truth, and we should respond to this by corresponding works of piety and devotion, in harmony with the superior privileges and advantages that have been bestowed upon us. The Lord is waiting to be gracious to his people, to give them an increased knowledge of his paternal character, of his goodness, mercy, and love. He waits to show them his glory; and if they follow on to know the Lord, they shall know that his goings forth are prepared as the morning. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 2 }
The people of God are not to stand upon common ground, but upon the holy ground of gospel truth. They are to keep step with their Leader, looking continually to Jesus, the Author and finisher of their faith, marching onward and upward, and having no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. It is impossible to tell what might have been the character and condition of the church today, had its members been doing the works of Christ. It is a sad fact that the great proportion of God’s professed people have not had faith in Christ as their personal Saviour. If they had believed the promises of God on record for them, they would have been daily receivers of the grace of God, and would have overcome through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour. It is the privilege of the children of God to be delivered from the control of the lusts of the flesh, and to preserve their peculiar, heavenly character, which distinguishes them from the lovers of the world. In their moral taste, in their habits and customs, they are separate from the world. Who are the children of God?—They are members of the royal family, and a royal nation, a peculiar people, showing forth the praises of him who hath called them out of darkness into his marvelous light. They do not worship idols, they love God with all the heart, and their neighbors as themselves. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 3 }
The people of God might be far in advance of what they are now, if they would sincerely and perseveringly connect daily with Christ. They do not press forward, and attain unto the things that are before, because they permit themselves to be attracted and held back through the influence of common, sensual things. The devotion and experience of the professed people of God are not in harmony with the light and privileges that God has given them. They are to be children of the light, children of the day, and yet many who have had exalted privileges fail to manifest corresponding faith and works. Jesus says to them as he said to the city wherein he had done mighty works, and where they failed to appreciate the light and to conform their life to it, “Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.” Many who claim to believe the truth, who have been blessed with great light, who have had great opportunities set before them, have yet come far short of reaching the high and holy standard that they would have reached if they had been doers of the words of Christ; and they have failed to set the example that they should have set before those who have had less experience than themselves in the Christian life, and before those who know not God, or Jesus Christ whom he hath sent. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 4 }
Among the professed children of God, how little patience has been manifested, how many bitter words have been spoken, how much denunciation has been uttered against those not of our faith. Many have looked upon those belonging to other churches as great sinners, when the Lord does not thus regard them. Those who look thus upon the members of other churches, have need to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God. Those whom they condemn may have had but little light, few opportunities and privileges. If they had had the light that many of the members of our churches have had, they might have advanced at a far greater rate, and have better represented their faith to the world. Of those who boast of their light, and yet fail to walk in it, Christ says, “But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum [Seventh-day Adventists, who have had great light], which art exalted unto heaven [in point of privilege], shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.” At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent [in their own estimation], and hast revealed them unto babes.” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 5 }
“And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 6 }
The Lord has established among us institutions of great importance, and they are to be managed, not as worldly institutions are managed, but after God’s order. They are to be managed with an eye single to his glory, that by all means perishing souls may be saved. To the people of God the testimonies of the Spirit have come, and yet many have not taken heed to reproofs, warnings, and counsels. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 7 }
“Here now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: fear ye not me saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual degree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? but this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you…. They judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord; shall not my soul be revenged on such a nation as this?” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 8 }
Shall the Lord be compelled to say, “Pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee”? “Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain…. Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 9 }
Will not those to whom have been committed the treasures of truth, consider the superior advantages of light and privilege that have been purchased for us by the sacrifice of the Son of God on Calvary’s cross? We are to be judged by the light that has been given us, and we can find no excuse by which to extenuate our course. The Way, the Truth, and the Life has been set before us. Many seek to excuse themselves by saying, “You must not judge me by some weak trait of character, but consider my character as a whole.” We always feel deep pain at heart when the sinner seeks to apologize for his sin, to smooth it over, and fails to realize the danger of cherishing one un-Christlike attribute of character. We are to place our will on the side of the Lord’s will, and firmly determine that by his grace we will be free from sin. Sin is the transgression of the law, and it is not the magnitude of the action in iniquity that stamps it as sin. Adam and Eve were prohibited from eating of the tree of good and evil. The test was a slight one, but the act of disobedience to God was the transgression of his law. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 10 }
The little sins that men think are of so trivial a character that on their account they will not be brought into condemnation, are very offensive in the sight of God. Says one, “You are too severe, a man must be allowed these little defects of character.” Let us hear the words of Christ. He says, “Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” People venture to commit sins that are grievous in the sight of God, and think that they are not to be called to task for them, because they say they are due to nervousness, to a peculiar temperament; but this is simply soothing the conscience, and crying, “Peace, peace, when there is no peace.” Sin is sin, and it is the delusion of Satan to look upon it in any other light than that it is grievous. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 11 }
We may flatter ourselves that we are free from many things of which others are guilty; but if we have some strong points of character, and but one weak point, there is yet a communion between sin and the soul. The heart is divided in its service, and says, “Some of self and some of thee.” The child of God must search out the sin which he has petted and indulged himself in, and permit God to cut it out of his heart. He must overcome that one sin; for it is not a trifling matter in the sight of God. { RH August 1, 1893, par. 12 }
One says, “I am not the least jealous, but then I do get provoked and say mean things, although I am always sorry after giving way to temper.” Another says, “I have this fault or that, but then I just despise such and such meanness as is manifested by a certain person of my acquaintance.” The Lord has not given us a list of graded sins, so that we may reckon some as of little consequence, and say that they will do but little harm, while others are of greater magnitude and will do much harm. A chain is no stronger than is its weakest link. We might pronounce such a chain good on the whole, but if one link is weak, the chain cannot be depended on. The work of overcoming is to be the study of every soul who enters the kingdom of God. That impatient word quivering on your lips must be left unspoken. That thought that your character is not rightly estimated must be put from you; for it weakens your influence, and works out the sure result, making you of light estimation in the minds of others. You should overcome the idea that you are a martyr, and lay claim to the promise of Christ, who says, “My grace is sufficient for thee.” { RH August 1, 1893, par. 13 }

MR No. 995—Greater Concern and Zeal Needed for Soul Winning
I find, after our American mail is closed up and gone, a letter written to you. Well, I am sorry, but will put it in the mail for the next steamer to convey to America. { 12MR 329.1 }
My mind is exercised day and night in regard to our missionary work. I am alarmed because there is so little genuine burden for perishing souls. The church knows her duty well, if she would only contemplate the situation. There is work to be done in home missionary efforts. There is work to be done in far-off lands. Why are there not hundreds giving themselves to the performance of the work, where [now] there is [but] one? The truth of God which they profess to believe should sanctify the soul, stirring every power that God has given them—the deep and living fountains of motives and sympathies, that they will cooperate with the heavenly intelligences. It is the Holy Spirit that accomplishes the work. [Said Jesus], “Without Me, ye can do nothing” [John 15:5]. Keep this before every congregation, that it is earnestness, wholeness of purpose, that God will accept. { 12MR 329.2 }
But what is the matter, that the church does not arouse and seek with earnest prayer and determined effort to set their people in the church to work? Are elders of these churches carrying any burden? Do they feel any love for the souls of the sheep of God’s pasture? Do they humble their hearts before God and by faith lay hold on the grace of Christ and put away their sins, and believe their repentance is accepted of God? Have they piety? Have they devotion to God? Will the elders of the church—the officers of the church—draw nigh to God? Will they now, in probationary

time, learn the lessons of Jesus Christ and practice them, until they shall ascend the high places of faith and command a clearer, more spiritual view of the situation? { 12MR 329.3 }
There has been an abundance of slipshod work done. The only conclusion the world can come to is that those who profess to believe the end of all things is at hand do not really believe the tremendous truth that Christ is at the door. Do they believe the mission of Christ was to save the lost and perishing, that Christ is the only remedy for sin, and that the world’s Redeemer came to the world, all seared and marred with the curse, to lift up fallen man, to reveal to the perishing the love of the Father and bring them to look and live and thereby bring many sons and daughters to glory? But everyone must strive lawfully to win the crown of everlasting life. They must believe the only name “given among men, whereby we must be saved” [Acts 4:12] is Jesus Christ. And this must be no pretentious faith, but that faith that makes Christ a personal Saviour. { 12MR 330.1 }
There has been very little deep piety and wholeness to God. When the spirit of Christ takes possession of the heart, then there is a missionary for God. The most grievous sin of idolatry exists in the church. And he who interposes between the professed Christian and his wholehearted service to God, takes the form of an idol, and the most grievous sin of idolatry is idolatry itself. { 12MR 330.2 }
The testimonies of God’s word are plain and clear in regard to the snares of the devil. Yet there are not only church members on the devil’s ground, but those who are opening the Scriptures to others practice evil and defile the soul and body. They are guilty before God because they are unholy. Were the church living by faith, had the oil of faith been in their vessels with their lamps, their guilty repose would end. They who believe

the sacred, elevating truths for this time cannot sleep over them. A burden is upon them to reiterate the words of Christ, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” [Revelation 22:17]. { 12MR 330.3 }
I look over the large fields here in Australia and New Zealand, destitute of laborers, calling for laborers, and this is an English-speaking people, and our brethren in these places are disappointed because no laborers are sent to them. { 12MR 331.1 }
Many in America who can, might move their families into different towns and cities and there lift the standard of truth. From the light given me of God, there is need of workers, and there has been existing the same need for years even from the commencement of the work in Australia and New Zealand. There can be persons, lay members of the church, who can for Christ’s sake move to these places and raise the standard of truth in the islands of the sea. { 12MR 331.2 }
“Ye are the light of the world.” Is this addressed exclusively to a few men who have been ordained to the ministry? No! but to every Christian, young or old, rich or poor. If Christ has forgiven them of their sins, if the truth has made them free, have they not a work to do for the Master? If they are Christians, they will present the truth to others. They will not consider that all that they have to do is to serve themselves—to please themselves and glorify themselves. They will have a sense that they are Christ’s, bought with a price, and will concentrate their energies to the work of building up a kingdom of God by raising souls that are ready to perish, seeking to save the lost. When believers are rejoicing in God because
332
they see the beauty there is in Jesus, because they see He is Chief among ten thousand, the One altogether lovely, do they consider how many know nothing of the saving grace of Christ? Many have not the joy and happiness of anticipating the heaven of bliss awaiting the faithful. While the church is indolent, not doing the work God has given it to do, men are sickening and dying without a ray of saving light, without being pardoned of their sins. { 12MR 331.3 }
And what are we as a people doing, to whom Christ has entrusted precious light and a knowledge of the truth? Jesus has made us the depositories of sacred truth, but so many are burying their talents in the earth, and point not out the antidote for sin. If they thus neglect their duty, God will pronounce them slothful servants, and will not, cannot, commend them. They will not receive the benediction, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” { 12MR 332.1 }
Elder Haskell, our testimony must be clear cut—there must be no daubing with untempered mortar. Sins of a grave character are cherished in our borders, and unless there is an awakening such as we have not seen for some time, which will convict and convert professed Sabbathkeepers, they will die in their sins. The punishment of Sodom and Gomorrah will be light in comparison with that of those who have had great light and precious opportunities, and have been earthly-minded, corrupt in thoughts and practices, and have not purified their souls by obeying the truth. { 12MR 332.2 }
Now we see [the] need of workers in the opening fields before us, but where are the men that can be trusted? Where are the men who year by year have been growing into a better knowledge of God and His ways and the movings of His providence? I want to sound in the ears of these sleepy,
333
half-paralyzed souls the words spoken to Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” [John 3:5]. There is need to seek God with all the heart. Elevate the standard. The commonness, the cheapness of conversation, reveal the measure of the spirituality of members of the church. { 12MR 332.3 }
Now, those who have had years in this same experience, know not God nor Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and should such go forth as representatives of Jesus Christ? These men will never give the right mold to other minds; they have not grown up to the full stature of men and women in Christ. They simply have the name of Christians but are not fitted for the work of God, and never will be until they are born again, and learn the A.B.C. in true religion of Jesus Christ. There is a little hope in one direction: Take the young men and women, and place them where they will come as little in contact with our churches as possible, that the low grade of piety which is current in this day shall not leaven their ideas of what it means to be a Christian. { 12MR 333.1 }
The worshipers of God are in need of transforming grace to subordinate the world to religion. In the place of making the temporal interests first, exhausting soul, body, and spirit to secure temporal advantages, Jesus points us to the heavenly treasure, and tells us to lay not up treasures in this earth, which will perish, but “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,” which will not perish, “for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” { 12MR 333.2 }
Jesus would have all who profess to believe in Him deal in the currency of heaven, handling those things upon which God has stamped His image and superscription. These He presents before us as of infinite value. We
334
see the need of a deep and thorough work in our churches but the Lord alone can by His Spirit make the hearts that are as steel, soft and sympathetic and true to the service of Christ. We are far behind because the churches have folded their hands in a peace-and-safety attitude, and are at ease in Zion, doing almost nothing. { 12MR 333.3 }
When the living zeal should be in their hearts, now as before, Satan is stirring the powers from beneath to make one last desperate effort to convert the world to his principles. He has his plans laid with satanic subtlety, and destruction cometh suddenly, while those who have the light, the warnings that such a crisis is before us, are almost unmoved. { 12MR 334.1 }
I can but feel deeply over the indifference of those who claim to be the repositories of sacred truth. They seem to be blinded in the way they view sin. They cannot see afar off, and have forgotten they were purged from their old sins. Why? Because they did not advance in the knowledge of the truth. They did not practice the truth; they were not sanctified through the truth. The Pattern was before them but they did not copy the Pattern. So perfect was the example and life of Christ, that not the least jot of inconsistency existed between His instructions and His life. Now, what a marked contrast is seen to exist in the truth we profess to believe as a people, and the life and character! { 12MR 334.2 }
Then there is not a vigilant supervision over self. There is not felt a necessity of placing self under the control of the Spirit of God, and of shunning as they would a serpent all facilities and temptations to evil. The Holy Spirit alone can be the positive remedial agent. We can put no confidence in humanity. Perfect humanity without Christ does not exist in
335
human society. Watch it, and degeneracy will be revealed. Active agencies are at work to pollute and stain the soul. The cross, the cross of Calvary, presented again and again and plainly dwelt upon in every discourse, will prove the life-healing balm; [it] will reveal the beauty and excellence of virtue. { 12MR 334.3 }
Those who quibble over the authenticity of the Scriptures and question the authority of revelation, will not be influenced. Their hearts are not sound. They are not at enmity with Satan. The heart is the treasure house of sin. Not being expelled, sin is hidden until an hour of opportunity, and then it is revealed and springs into action. The first work is with the heart. Truth—the love of Jesus—must supply the vacuum. Said Christ, “Make the tree good, and the fruit will be good” [see Matthew 12:33]. { 12MR 335.1 }
Elder Haskell, the Lord is waiting to do great things for His people. But they must be pure in heart before they can see God or know Him as a pure and holy God. Jesus led His disciples into the audience chamber of the Most High; He impressed upon their minds what was to be the burden of their prayer. They were to pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit, which would supply every need of the soul, for it would work by love and purify the soul. The Spirit taking His abode in the heart, will transform the entire being, conforming it to the likeness of Christ. Let us humble our hearts before God and believe He has pardoned all our transgressions and forgiven all our sins. We cannot honor God unless we do believe this, and make Jesus our personal Saviour. We must as a people rise up from our formality. We must enter the strait gate. { 12MR 335.2 }
336
Satan has placed his active agents along the passage to dispute the way of every soul. Christ has encouraged His followers not to be intimidated. Press on; urge your way through. “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able” ( Matthew 13:24). Darling, cherished idols will have to be given up, and the sins that have been indulged, even if it comes as close as the plucking out of the right eye or cutting off the right arm. Agonize! Force your way through the very armies of hell that oppose your passage. { 12MR 336.1 }
Oh! we must be terribly in earnest to impress upon every soul that there is a heaven to win and a hell to shun. Every energy of the soul must be aroused to force their passage, and seize the kingdom by force. Satan is active, and we must be active too. Satan is untiring and persevering, and we must be the same. There is no time to make excuses and blame others for our backslidings; no time now to flatter the soul [that] if circumstances had only been more favorable, how much better, how much easier [it would be] for us to work the works of God. We must tell even those who profess to believe in Christ, that they must cease to offend God by sinful excuses. { 12MR 336.2 }
Jesus has provided for every emergency. If they will walk where He leads the way, He will make rough places plain. He, with His experience, will create an atmosphere for the soul. He closes the door and brings the soul into seclusion with God, and the needy soul is to forget everyone and everything, but God. Satan will talk with him, but speak aloud to God and He will drive back the hellish shadow of Satan. With humble, subdued, thankful hearts they will come forth saying, “Thy gentleness hath made me great.” The sincere seeker comes forth from the alliance with God, rich in
337
the assurance of His love, to go forth to distill a heavenly prayer wherever he goes. He can talk of the righteousness of Christ; he can talk [of] the love of God with sincerity. He has trusted and he knows the Lord is good. { 12MR 336.3 }
Thus, work is to be done in all our churches. Christ—His love, His forgiveness, His purity—is to be the theme upon which we are to dwell. { 12MR 337.1 }
The charms of Jesus are to be kept ever before our minds. Charged with the elevated character of the True Model every soul must copy, let us turn our eyes from everything that would dishearten or discourage. { 12MR 337.2 }
Satan will work to distort everything to our vision, and make a mountain of a molehill. Our eyes must be steadfastly fixed upon Jesus. The Lord Jesus is our leader; we must follow where He leads the way. We are not to commence to plan for the second step. We are not to say, “Lord, after I take that step, then what shall I do? for I shall meet with difficulties.” But by faith we must take that one step, come what will, and trust in Jesus. { 12MR 337.3 }
Elder Haskell, the reason our ministers are so inefficient is because they go to their work and come from their labors, if they have any success, full of themselves. The disciples of Christ did this when they said, “Even the spirits are subject unto us.” Jesus could discern their danger, and He said, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile.” Come out of the din of battle, away from the conflict, and hold communion with God. Thus it is with many workers. They are too strong, too full of self. The Lord cannot lead them or teach them or use them to His glory, for they are wise in their own conceits, and vainly imagine that the Lord cannot do without them. Self must be buried. We must educate the people to seek the Lord. We must speak plain words to ministers who are walking in the sparks of their own kindling. { 12MR 337.4 }
338
Praise of men and flattery makes ministers hungry for more until they think, as did Elder [E. P.] Daniels, that the praise of man is of more value than the approval of God. We must, if saved, imbibe the Spirit and power of Christ. Self must be hidden in Christ, and Christ alone appear. Our work is to elevate, not by praising anyone, but by upholding Jesus. Bring the mind to Jesus; lift Him up, the Man of Calvary, before the people and He can do all things for the humble, trusting believer. { 12MR 338.1 }
P.S. I enclose this matter to you. Will you please send copy of the general matter in [the] letter to you, as Marian wants to make note of some things in it.—Letter 16f, 1892. (Written to S. N. Haskell, May 9, 1892, from Preston, Melbourne, Australia.) { 12MR 338.2 }
