Leavened Churches

During the church service of a well-known conservative denomination, the piano player was playing a sacred hymn. But in the midst of that song, the piano player suddenly stopped, and gave a kn owing smile to the parishioners, and immediately began playing an upbeat, marimba dance song.

.

Well, the obvious point he was trying to convey was that this congregation was casting off all tradition of past, now embracing the fashions and fads of the current day. And the audience seemed to be OK with this.

.

Well, this is nothing new. Even back in Jesus earthly ministry, He warned His disciples…”Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” Matthew 16:6

.

Yeast was spoken of even back in the days of the Exodus. In Exodus, Chapter 12, the children of Israel were to eat while fully girded, both the Passover lamb and the unleavened bread.

.

This ceremony was symbolic of the Christian life. The lamb of course, represented Jesus, our sacrificial lamb. being fully girded represents being girded with the armor of God. And the unleavened bread represents the pure, uncompromised Word of God.

.

Yeast (leavening) represents worldly philosophies. And so, the unleavened bread represents God’s Word without any worldly philosophies, traditions, etc..

.

And so today, we have the deplorable situation in which so many worldly aspects have crept in unawares into God’s house.

.

Oh yes, much of this worldly yeast is very subtle, especially in the more conservative congregations. But it’s there!

.

For instance, in centuries past, all joking and jesting was strictly frowned upon. Listen to the Christian reformer, Thomas brooks…“They (apostate teachers) preach more to please the ear than to profit the heart…False teachers handle holy things rather with wit and trifling, rather than with fear and reverence. False teachers are soul-murderers. They are like evil http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Brooks.jpgsurgeons, that skin over the wound—but never heal it…False teachers are Hell’s greatest enrichers.”

.

Thomas Brooks on, “The 7 Chacteristics of False Teachers”

.

Well, as that old saying goes, “You’ve come a long way, baby!” Now, joking and jesting is almost universally accepted, even embraced in almost every congregation!

.

But this is not the only sign that today’s church-world has become leavened. Listen to the music in today’s churches. Dance music has been combined with quasi-Christian lyrics in an attempt to appeal to the younger, unconverted multitudes.

.

Yes, today’s congregations desire to reach those unconverted worldly tastes of the younger generation using the various genre with all its sensual and trendy appeal.

.

Now in addition, many of today’s churches have dropped their dress-code and now allow women to wear tight, revealing clothing, placing a visual snare before the men of the congregation.

.

And if that’s not enough, today’s churches have largely devolved into a social/fraternal club, offering  a host of social and community events, such as sports events, clubs, bingo, parties, excursions, camp-outs, politics,
