Daily Devotional, Year 2 – APRIL 10

.

“Ask For The Old Paths!”

.

“Thus saith the LORD,

Stand ye in the ways, and see,

and ask for the old paths,

where is the good way,

and walk therein,

AND YE SHALL FIND REST UNTO YOUR SOULS.“

Jeremiah, 6:16

.

There are some teachers in today’s church-world who teach that God wants His people to return to an Old Testament style Law-keeping.

.

And one of the premier Bible texts used to substantiate this idea, is found in Jeremiah, Chapter 6, Verse 16…

.

Listen… “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the OLD PATHS, where is the good way, and walk therein, AND YE SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.” Jeremiah, 6:16

.

**Okay, so here it says that we should walk the “Old Paths”. A very simple concept! Right?**

.

COMPARING SCRIPTURE

.

Well, fortunately, the Bible is a very faithful book!

.

And of itself, the Bible says… “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof (confirmation), for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2nd Timothy 3:16

.

**And so, as this above verse reveals, “all scripture is profitable for reproof, for correction”.**

.

Therefore, this verse from Jeremiah, regarding “Old Paths” as advocating us to return to Old Testament obedience, can be either confirmed or corrected, by merely searching similar passages in Scripture.

REST UNTO YOUR SOULS

.

No, we cannot determine doctrine based on just one verse!

.

Fortunately, there is a very similar passage in the New Testament… “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: AND YE SHALL FIND REST UNTO YOUR SOULS.” Matthew 11:28, 29

.

Okay, so both verses speak of finding, “rest unto your souls”!

.

**But one speaks of walking the “old paths”, and this other speaks of taking Christ’s easy yoke upon us, and learning of Him.**

.

WHICH WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY

.

So, which passage is the correct passage? Which way is the right way to find rest unto our souls? To walk in the old paths? Or by taking the easy yoke of Jesus and learning of Him?

.

Or perhaps both these passages are speaking of the exact same way of finding that, “rest unto your souls”!

.

Yes, both Jeremiah 6:16 and Matthew 11:28, 29 are saying the very same thing!

.

Listen to Jesus… “And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:4-6

.

And so, Jesus says of Himself… “I am the Way!”

.

Yes, Jesus is the Way in which we are to travel…

.

FOLLOWING JESUS

.

Listen again… “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And He saith unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him.” Matthew 4:18-20

.

Here is a very beautiful passage about Jesus calling Peter and Andrew to, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

.

And this little scenario is a grand portrait of the Christian life. Peter and his brother, Andrew are a picture of all true disciples of Jesus, throughout time!

.

SATAN COMPLICATES THINGS

.

Jesus says to each of us, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

.

This is a very simple concept: to follow Jesus, as one of His disciples. And yet, that serpent of old, the Devil, has all but obscured the simplicity of the Gospel.

.

Yes, Satan has filled this world with so very many obstacles, which prevent God’s people from following Jesus.

.

And many of these diversions are seemingly good things!

.

And so, many Christians are deceived by all these seemingly harmless pursuits, and end up going after these so-called “innocent” pursuits!

.

JEREMIAH’S DAY

.

Well, this was exactly the same situation in Jeremiah’s day.

.

**But unfortunately, they didn’t want to walk in those “old paths”…**

.

And even though the people of Jeremiah’s day knew nothing about Jesus, they nevertheless were given the same opportunity to become followers of God…

.

Listen… “He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:3, 4

.

**Yes, right here in this most famous of all Bible passages are the “paths of righteousness”, the same “old paths” which Jeremiah 6:16 spoke of!**

.

SAME SITUATION

.

And so, the very same offer was extended to those living in Old Testament times.

.

And yet, like New Testament Christians, Satan confused and deceived those people as well!

Listen… “ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will NOT walk therein.” Jeremiah 6:16, 17

.

No, they didn’t want to give this world up!

.

And so, Jeremiah was calling, not just them, but all of us to return to the “old paths”, that we all may find “rest unto your souls”!

.

COME FOLLOW ME

.

And here is a miraculous journey, which the Lord calls us to embark upon!

.

Yes, miraculously, Jesus will lead us today, just like He led His disciples, Peter, and Andrew, and John, and Philip, and all the others, 2,000 years ago!

.

**And so, may we all return to the “old paths”, spoken of by Jeremiah.**

.

And may we cease from the Babylonish confusion which reigns in today’s church-world, and simply press on, in our Heavenward sojourn, as we follow the Lamb to the top of heavenly Mount Sion!
